What is Medical Cupping?

Medical cupping is the application of a specially designed cup to the clients skin, the practitioner will then create suction within the cup drawing up the clients skin and underlying tissues into the cup. The suction encourages blood-flow to the area which, in turn, promotes healing and reduction of pain. Research has shown this treatment to have some benefit when it comes to pain relief.

Reported physiological effects include:

  • Decreased or relief of pain & inflammation

  • Release of deep muscular tissue

  • Increased range of motion

  • Open chest & lungs

  • Improved circulation

  • Drain lymph fluid, clearing drainage pathways

  • Sedate the nervous system

  • Open energy flow of the body

What are the indications for treatment with medical cupping?

If you have ever had a strain, sprain, back injury or musculoskeletal pain then you would likely benefit from medical cupping. Other indications include, but are not limited to; tight or hardened muscles, pain & restriction of movement, scar tissue, edema, restricted lymphatic flow, inflammation of joints and tissues and trigger points.

What conditions respond to medical cupping?

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Arthritis, tendonitis & other inflammatory conditions

  • Sluggish colon, IBS

  • Stagnant lymph & edema

  • Poor circulation

  • Sciatica

  • Insomnia & anxiety

  • Poorly nourished skin & muscle tissue

  • Cellulite

  • Migraines & headaches

  • High blood pressure

  • Asthma & pneumonia

  • Rheumatism

  • TMJ dysfunction

  • Parkinson’s disease

What are the side effects?

Medical cupping is a relatively benign treatment with the most common side effect being “cup kissing” or discoloration of the skin where the cups are placed. If you remember the 2017 when swimmer Michael Phelps was seen with dark circles all over his skin, this was from treatment with medical cupping.
