Drinking from a Fire Hydrant


n medical school they used an analogy for the amount of information we were expected to learn, it’s like trying to drink from a fire hydrant, you can do it but you cannot take it all in. In medical terms, when our brains age they become less “plastic”. Plasticity is defined as the ability to change and adapt in response to stimuli or experience. In regard to the brain, plasticity refers to the brains ability to make new memories and recall stored information.

Our brains can start to lose plasticity as early as age 30. A high stress personal and/or professional life can speed up this process. When the brain has reached its limit, but it is continuedly taxed, you experience burnout.

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands.
